Letters from occupied New Orleans, 1862-1863.

These two letters are thought to have been sent to Charles Edgar Appleby (1824-1913), a real estate investor. The author of the letters may be John Appleby (b. 1822), Charles Edgar Appleby's brother. The letters concern a trade business operating in New Orleans, and discuss prices and the market for several different commodities such as sugar, salt, molasses and hay. The 1863 letter mentions General Banks and the battle at Port Hudson. Other relatives are mentioned by name: Aaron Remsen Appleby (1838-1886); Leonard Appleby (1798-1879); Jacob Charles Van Wickle (b. 1805); John Schureman Sutphin (1823-1900); and Jacob Charles Appleby (b. 1836).
